After graduating summa cum laude from Northern Virginia Community College, Lara transferred to the University of Virginia where she carries a 3.74 GPA and is on the Dean’s List. She is enrolled in a global development studies program and plans to enter the Peace Corps after college. She has been a Sunday school teacher in her Orthodox church and volunteers in college as secretary for Carpenter’s Kids in Tanzania Club (raising monies to provide educational resources for 50 of the most vulnerable children in a Tanzania village). She has been “enthusiastically recommended” by a college professor who notes that Lara has been accepted into a competitive study abroad program in Bhutan for next year and will explore development work this summer in a planned trip to Fiji with HELP International. Her ultimate goal is to work with the International Committee of the Red Cross, United Nations or similar group to specifically focus on the Syrian refugee crisis.
